The Sri Lanka Scout Association, the national Scouting organization of Sri Lanka, was founded in 1912, and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1953. The boys only Sri Lanka Scout Association has 24,982 members as of 2004.
Senator E.W. Kannangara served on the World Scout Committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement from 1960 until 1961.
In 1973, Mr. Kingsley C. Dassenaike was awarded the Bronze Wolf, the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, awarded by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world Scouting.
As Sri Lanka is a multireligious and multiracial country, Scouting has been a great unifying force.
There are various community development projects carried out in cooperation with the government organizations, United Nations and other service organizations.
Scouting has been introduced into the prisons. It has spread to other institutions such as certified schools. There are also Scout units for handicapped boys such as the blind and deaf and for boys in leprosy hospitals.
