In 1913, he was among the founders of the Pfadicorps Patria in Bern, one of the early Swiss Scout units. In the same year Bonstetten was among the founders of the Schweizer Pfadfinderbund (Swiss Boy Scout Association). He was elected as President (Zentralpräsident des SPB ) of the Swiss Boy Scouts in 1918.

He was awarded the Bronze Wolf, the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, awarded by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world Scouting, in 1937.[1] He became President d´Honneur of the Scouts Alpine Club in 1946.[2]
