Lawrie Dring was in the army when a colleague asked him to join [[Scouting]] in the 1940s.  He started as a leader in [[Wolf Cubs|Cub Scouts]] in 1947, in Wuppertal, Germany.

He is a member and a Scouter of 1st Yorkshire Baden-Powell Scouts Troop. He has visited the Canada, the United States, Germany and South Africa.  He also attended [[Jamboree 2008]], an event celebrating the centenary of Baden-Powell's first official Scout camp.
