Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is operated by Orange County Council and serves all youth from across Southern California. It features a number of outdoor overnight programs.

The mission of the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is to serve all youth of Orange County by providing quality outdoor educational programs that instill in them an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach effective teamwork, instruct about the cultural history of Orange County, and provide access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.


Overview

This 210-acre outdoor education center, owned and operated by the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America, is located in Orange, California and accessible through Irvine Regional Park. The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center (IROEC) features half-day through five-day academic and recreational programming. Our hands-on approach to outdoor education allows participants to explore the outdoors while developing creativity, leadership skills and a respect for the environment.

Ranch Camp

The Ranch Camp has a 188 tree citrus grove representing over 30 varieties of citrus, organic garden beds with crops traditionally grown in the Orange County, beehives for pollination education and all atop an aquifer where we operate a Wind & Solar powered well.

Areas of study include: plants, animals, agriculture techniques, land management, water quality, nutrition, food-chains, hydroponics and aquaculture.

Astronomy & Science Camp

The Astronomy & Science Camp boasts two, 11.5" Celestron and one 8" Parks Hit telescopes. Students experience the thrills of space discovery and the universe beyond their reach. Activities at the Astronomy & Science Camp excite students' interest in science and technology.

Areas of study include: astronomy, aerospace, aviation, weather, atmospheric pressure, sublimation and math.

Mining Camp

The Mining Camp features and 1800 square foot mine with two shafts and a crank-operated ore elevator. Students wear miner's helmets with lights and use hand tools to dig for ore, crack geodes and pan for gold.

Areas of study include: geology, engineering, geography, plate tectonics, earthquakes, archeology, fossils & fossil fuels and minerals.

Adventures in the Foothills

Adventures in the Foothills is an exciting, four-night resident camp, comprised of days in the foothills where students experience physical, earth and life science principles through hands-on lessons, outdoor activities and team building games. This program is rich in content and addresses over 100 California State Standards which are proven to boost test scores. Gains in student learning are noteworthy and are measured through pre and post assessment activities. Resident programs include delicious meals and lodging in our new Bunkhouses and state-of-the-art 4000 square foot Dining Hall. Groups arrive at 10:00am on the first day and depart at 10:00am on the last day. Programs for schools can include time at the Aquatics Center with dual heated pools and Mountain Waterslide, upon request.
