The Ngati Toa Sea Scout Group was established in 1959 and is located in the Ngati Toa Domain, Mana. The Group leases reserve land from the Porirua City Council and, with 48 years of community support, has constructed excellent den and boatshed facilities at the water’s edge adjacent to the Mana Marina.

The Group delivers a varied programme with an emphasis on outdoor activities, suitable for the age group of each of the four sections; Keas, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. For this purpose the Group has an extensive range of camping and other equipment and resources.

The Group is always well represented at National Jamborees, Ventures and Regattas, and at most regional and Coastal Zone events. Over recent years our youth members have also represented the Group at international events such as World Jamboree (Chile 1998), Australian Jamboree (1999), Michigan Camporee, (USA 2000), European Jamboree (London 2005) and Australian Venture (Sydney 2006). Two youth members from Ngati Toa Group will join 40,000 scouts and leaders from around the world to attend the Centenary World Jamboree near London in July 2007. 8 Then are to travel to Singapore, Ireland, Finland and to the Arctic Circle on a massive search for Santa - the Venturers of course!

The unique location of Ngati Toa Group provides the opportunity to progressively expose youth members to water based activities in the calm of the marina, the protected waters of the Porirua Harbour and Pauatahanui Inlet, or the more challenging Plimmerton Bay. In order to deliver the water based training programme, the Group owns three cutters and five sunburst yachts, an inflatable safety boat and four kayaks, together with all safety equipment such as life-jackets.

Ngati Toa Sea Scouts regularly test their camping and other skills by competing against other groups at rowing /sailing regattas, swimming carnivals, raft races, etc. At the 2005 National Regatta Ngati Toa Group was ranked overall 2nd best Sea Scout Group in New Zealand.

The Group aims, not only to provide the full scouting programme to the young people of the local area, but also to provide Sea Scouting to youth from Johnsonville to Pukerua Bay as we are the only Sea Scout Group between Wellington Harbour and Paraparaumu.

The youth training programme is delivered by parents and other adults who have been warranted by Scouting New Zealand. The Group is always keen to identify more adults who are interested in taking on a youth leadership role. A modular programme of training and ongoing support is provided to new leaders.

The Group relies on all parents and caregivers to each take responsibility for a small part of the workload of the Group.
