Greater Alabama Council

The Greater Alabama Council is a local council of the Boy Scouts of America located in the state of Alabama. Council offices are located in Birmingham, Alabama. They can be found online at http://www.1bsa.org/

Council History

The Greater Alabama Council is located in northern and central Alabama. In the 1990s, the Boy Scouts of America went through a restructuring in an attempt to reduce manpower, and in several states small historic Councils were merged into a larger supercouncil. The new council is an example of such a supercouncil. The council office is located in Birmingham, Alabama.

Districts

The Greater Alabama Council is divided into 14 districts:

1. Arrowhead District - encompasses Morgan, Limestone, and Lawrence counties, and covers all of the Decatur Metropolitan Area.
2. Birmingham District - greater Birmingham Metro area
3. Cheaha District - covers Clay, Randolph and Talladega Counties
4. Cherokee District - West Jefferson County
5. Choccolocco District - Calhoun and Cleburne Counties
6. Etowah District - Etowah County
7. Mountain Lake District - covers Jackson and Marshall Counties
8. Mulberry District - Blount and Cullman Counties
9. Sequoyah District - Cherokee and DeKalb Counties
10. Shelby District - Shelby County
11. Talakto District - Madison County
12. Three Rivers District - East Jefferson County and St Clair County
13. Vulcan District - Over the Mountain communities
14. Westmoreland District - encompasses Franklin, Colbert, and Lauderdale Counties.

Camps

Sequoyah Sidewinder - scout camp waterslide

Traditional summer camps feature a week long scouting adventure, educational, camping and merit badge program. They are usually available for youth group and family camping the rest of the year

• Camp Sequoyah - (Greater Alabama Council) - a 1,447 acres traditional camp in east central Alabama, near Cheaha State Park. Part of Frank Spain Scout Reservation and home of the Sequoyah Sidewinder.
• Camp Westmoreland - CLOSED: a historic Boy Scout summer camp located in Lauderdale County. This is one of the oldest operating camps in the Southeastern United States; it first opened in the 1920s. Ceased operations as a summer camp in the 1980s.
• Camp Jack Wright - Primitive Camp: Located adjacent to Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park with more than 1,500 acres in three counties set aside for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation.
• Camp Comer - main attractions include the cool summer temperature, beautiful Lake Republic, rocks, and a mountain atmosphere.
• Camp Jackson - a 515-acre primitive camp located 5 miles east of Scottsboro on the Tennessee River at Jones Cove.

Cathedral Caverns State Park in Marshall Co AL

1. Wheeler NWR is a 35,000-acre wildlife refuge on the Tennessee River near Decatur AL. This wilderness of deep river channels and tupelo swamps is home to over 500 unique species of bird, fish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. River treks, camping and hiking Trails.
2. Cathedral Caverns State Park, located in Marshall County in Northeast Alabama is home to some of the largest underground cavern formations in the greater southeast. Camping, hiking and backcountry trails are also here.
3. Cheaha State Park is a 2719 mountain-top wilderness preserve. Facilities include a 30-unit resort inn, restaurant, vacation cottages, chalets, modern campground, picnic areas, biking trails, hiking trails and lots of beautiful scenery. One of the most popular destinations in the state park system. Trailhead to the Pinhoti National Recreation Trail.
