History

This year’s (2021) Windy Fire almost decimated Whitsett. We were very lucky plus had a cadre of Fire Fighters in Camp who were able to protect the buildings. The 2002 McNally Fire almost got Camp, but it was diverted around, only hitting between the lower Camp and C.O.P.E. A fire in 1970 burned through the upper area of Whitsett, above the Staff area.

All the above info, plus more “misadventures” have hit Camp. You can read about those plus read the interesting history of Whitsett from it’s actual “Soft Opening” year of 1946, the dedication in 1947, and the growth and expansion of Whitsett through 2021, the official 75th year. It all part of the book, “The Camp Whitsett Story” available through the Friends of Camp Whitsett website. All proceeds from the book will go back into Whitsett. Especially important with the rebuilding going to take place. Put your order in today.
