Scoutingkampeereiland Jisp, officially Scouting kampeerterrein ’t Mieuwtje is a island in the Wormer- and Jisperveld bogland nature area in the Dutch municipality Wormer.
History
The site openend round 1960 as a terrain for the ‘Nederlandse Padvindstersgilde’. The area was meant for girls to get acquainted with water-based activities. The initiator of the site was Mrs. Miep de Wit-van de Stadt. She wrote a book about her experiences on the island, "De Goede Verwachting” (good expectation).
Usage
On the island are two campsites, each with their own campfire bowl. Toilets and showers are shared. Because it is a bogland it is prohibited to dig and put large pioneering object on the soil. The island is connected to the drinking water system but electricity is provided by a 12 volt battery. Small LED’s provide lights in the sanitary building and a USB connection is offered to charge cellphones.
Activity’s
In general its posible to swim in the surrounding waters. Its mentionable to keep an eye on the swimmers due to the recreation ships sailing by. Staf members better sit in a canoe to point out the swimmers to the sailors. In cooperation with the canoe center in Wormer, there’s a network of canoe junctions created. These are mentioned on a map, available for all campers and signs in the water guide the canoeists in the correct route. The camp island is labeled as ‘Labelterrein’ which is a quality mark given by Scouting Nederland.
Fleet
The island is only reachable by boat. Entering and departing campers can get help from the managers. Ones on the island campers can use the fleet of canoes and rowing boats. The camp also offers a ‘Lelievlet’ sailing boat for hire.
Location
The island is located in the largest bogland in western Europe. This bogland is maintained by the association ‘Natuurmonumenten’ (Nature Monuments). Surrounding the bogland are the city’s Amsterdam, Purmerend, Alkmaar and Zaandam. In Alkmaar is a famous cheese marked, Zaandam has a outdoor collection of historical windmills and houses called the ‘Zaanse Schans’.
