Scouting Sint Martinus Breda-West (Scouting Saint Martin) is a scout group in the southwest of the City of Breda, a city in the Dutch province North Brabant, near the border with Belgium.

The group gathers in a the attics of the former St. Bernardus school in the village-in-the-city-district 'Princenhage'.

History

Round 1930, after lots of hesitation, the dutch bishops gave in to permit a Catholic scouts movement. In many parishes small groups started their activities and also in the village of Princenhage.

Chapelain Ansems and mister A. van Meel saw the advantages to startup a group in their Saint Martin parish. They went looking for leaders and a suitable location to gather and by 1932 the first cub pack was established. Cub leaders were given a name from the Jungleboek and so, ‘Akela’ Nooren and ‘Raksha’ De Kroon were leading the pack. Since the beginning the group is active on the attics of the St. Bernardusschool and they still are.

Round 1936 a Voortrekkers (Pioneers) group started. Almoner Ansems is to be followed up by his assessor Almoner Van Eekelen in 1937, the same year as the 5th World Scout Jamboree took place in the Netherlands. The scouts from Princenhage visetend this event in Vogelenzang.

After the War

The Second World War was a holdback for the scout movement in general. The Sint Martinus group founded a place go into hiding in the mill of mr. V. van der Reyt and continue their activity’s. In 1945 the by the occupiers plundered attics needed to be restored. Lack of materials was making the restorations progressing slowly.

In 1946 there was the creation of guide company Saint Lucia in Princenhage. They grow very fast and found a home in the former fire engine house behind the church. After thorough renovation a space for a second and a third cub pack was created and a second and third pioneer division could settle in the former police cels. Due to lack of staf members these groups had to stop after a few years.

The neckie in the post-war years was temporary replaced by a red & white handkerchief the neckie in blue with a grey border was permanently chosen in 1957.

The village and municipality Princenhage was annexed in to the City of Breda in 1942. Surrounding the former village there were tree other groups. The Hieronymusgroep, Pius XII-groep and the Meekokkigroep.

In 1967 the Hieronymus group with their clubhome at the Oranjeboomstraat, joined the Sint Martinus. Some years later the Pius-XII group followed and the affix ‘Breda-West’ was added to the group name. Making it Scouting Sint Martinus Breda-West.

De Dobbelsteen

The St. Bernardusschool at the ‘Doelen 36’ was abolished and the building went over to the municipality of Breda after the annexation of Princenhage. The building was renamed the ‘Dobbelsteen’ (Die 🎲) in 1993 and was prepared for the use of different community associations. A choir, hobby club, daycare center and community center found a home in the building. By 2011 the municipality announced to the users that they had to leave the building as it was offered for sale and for commercial exploration.

In the still very village like city-district Princenhage a cooperation was founded and so the residents and entrepreneurs of Princenhage got the money together to buy the building from the municipality. The official transfer was on Saturday the 14th of June 2014 and the “Broad Society Princenhage” became the new owner of the building and its surrounding grounds, making it a proper Community Building by use and ownership.
