The Kurunegala Scout Association, officially known as the Kurunegala District Scout Headquarters, is the district branch of the Sri Lanka Scout Association (SLSA) serving the Kurunegala region. Established in 1922, it has grown into one of the most vibrant and active Scouting communities in Sri Lanka, fostering leadership, character development, and civic responsibility among youth.

History

Scouting in Kurunegala began in 1922 with the establishment of its first Scout group. Over the decades, it has expanded steadily, playing a crucial role in the Scouting movement in Sri Lanka and producing many accomplished Scouts and leaders.

Affiliation

The Kurunegala Scout Association operates under the umbrella of the Sri Lanka Scout Association, which is managed by the Ceylon Scout Council. The SLSA has been a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) since 1953. As part of this national structure, Kurunegala contributes to empowering youth to become active citizens and lead positive change in their communities.

Sections

  2. Cub Scouts (ages 7 years – 10 years 6 months)
  3. Junior Scouts (ages 10 years 6 months – 14 years 6 months)
  4. Senior Scouts (ages 14 years 6 months – 18 years)
  5. Rover Scouts (ages 17 years 6 months – 24 years)

  • Project Green Legacy: A rare tree plantation drive in collaboration with local environmental organizations
  • EAGLES International Challenge Hike: Celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Air Scouting, with Kurunegala teams earning top honours
  • Annual District Events: Including JOTA-JOTI (Jamboree on the Air/Jamboree on the Internet), Sub District Rallies, leadership camps, and badge work camps
  • Sampath Ranawake Memorial Challenge Trophy (SRMCT): A nationally recognized orienteering hike competition attracting over 1,000 Scouts and Guides from across Sri Lanka
  • Community Service Projects: Such as the Clean Sri Lanka Project and safety awareness workshops
  • National Participation: Active involvement in National Scout Jamborees and centenary celebrations of Scouting in Sri Lanka

Headquarters

The Kurunegala District Scout Headquarters is located in a central area of Kurunegala, surrounded by civic and commercial establishments. It serves as the administrative, coordination, and training hub for all Scouting activities in the district.

Scout Shop

The association maintains a Scout Shop, supplying uniforms, badges, books, and essential Scouting equipment to support the needs of Scout Groups and individual members.

Kurunegala Scout Association actively collaborates with schools, local organizations, and national bodies to conduct:
