The Kruikenstam is a Student Scouts and Guide Clan in the Dutch city of Tilburg. The clan is affiliated with the national Dutch Studentenscouting Nederland.

Members of the Kruikenstam are originate from the Tilburg University, both the Avans and the Fontys, University’s of Applied Sciences and the Junior colleges throughout the city.

The clan is coming together once every fortnight on the Tuesday evening at the clubhouse of the Lord Baden-Powell scout group in the city-district of Broekhoven in the south part of Tilburg.

Beginning

The first ideas for the clan origin in a random communications education in Tilburg. Two students sharing a pasion for scouting and the province of North Brabant came together with a plan to establish a new student scout group. The first gathering was organised on the 6th of oktober 2022 as a informal cocktail party. It was the beginning of many activity’s, cocktail evenings and camps.

Name

The name ‘Kruikenstam' refers to the nickname for Tilburg during the Carnaval season “Kruikenstad” which translates as ‘Jars City’. The inhabitants of Tilburg call themselves ‘Kruiken’ or ‘Kruikenzeikers’ (en; Jug Peeers) during carnival.

In the 17th and 18th century Tilburg was the centre of the textile industry in the Netherlands. To ‘clean’ the wol, the factory’s needed a surprising ingredient, urine. The inhabitants of the city caught their ‘natural product’ in a jug ore jar, which was collected by employees of the textile factory’s. As a secondary benefit the city stayed clean of odors and pollution by human waste.

Since carnival is an important and prominent event in the city and in the province North Brabant, the student scouts couldn’t stay behind and they adjusted to the customs of the city. With a nod to this little pice of Tilburg history, the clan was given the name Kruikenstam (en: Jar Clan). Like the original ‘Kruiken’, the inhabitants of Tilburg, the members of the clan are known for their togetherness, creativity and conviviality. Values that are part of both scouting and carnival.

Logo and Neckie

Again the origin of the logo and colours of the neckie can be traced back to carnival. The people of Tilburg, during carnival called the ‘Kruikenzeikers’, traditionally wrap themself in scarfs, cloves, socks, caps and al other clothing in the colours orange and green, therefore the colours are inseparable connected to the city.

In the Kruikenstam logo, the top leaf of the trefoil was given the shape of a terracotta jar in orange. The other leaves and fleur-de-lis arrowhead are in green.

Activity’s

As a combination of a student association and a scout group the activaty’s take ‘the best of two worlds’ according to the members. The program implements typical scouting elements like hiking, gigant games and bonfires. At the same time the student aspect ensures a cozy intrest in drinking party’s and a close group of people sharing the same intrest. Due to the alliance with the national student scouting of the Netherlands, the members of the Kruikenstam are participating in the annual Studentenstammenweekend (Student Scout Clan Weekend) and the Studentenscoutinggala.
