ABoK #1452

The Ashley's bend is used to tie two ropes together, end to end. It is very easy to tie and untie once you have the knack. Even so it is a very secure bend and can put up with a good deal of strain and movement. It can also be used to tie a bend with thin line. It is similar to the Zeppelin bend.
