Scouting in South Dakota has a long history, from the 1910s to the present day, serving thousands of youth in programs that suit the environment in which they live.

Boy Scouting in South Dakota

There are four Boy Scouts of America local councils serving South Dakota. All of South Dakota lies within Central Region, except for Harding, Butte, Lawrence, Pennington, Custer, Fall River, Meade, Shannon, Haakon, Jackson and Bennett counties, as part of Western Region.

Girl Scouting in South Dakota

On July 1, 2007 the three Girl Scout councils of South Dakota and the three in North Dakota will finish merging to form one council, Girl Scouts - Dakota Horizons, which will serve girls in both those states and in several counties in north-western Minnesota. The headquarters will be in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
