Newport Sea Base is boy scout maritime aquatic center operated by Orange County Council and serves scouts from across Southern California. It is located in Newport Harbor.

Overview

Camp History

1937, when “the Base” was a little more than a strip of sand just east of “The Arches,” a groundswell of public support created the first 25-year lease of the Newport Sea Base property to the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America. Since that time, the Newport Sea Base has been providing quality maritime programs for youth with a commitment to developing character and inspiring a love for the marine environment in the hearts of youth.

William H. Spurgeon, III spearheaded a drive to develop the facility that included a bulkhead, storage facility, a clubhouse, restrooms and shower building in 1947. By 1961, 2,100 Scouts used the Base, and by 1969 the overall day use attendance was 12,000 a year. During that period, new buildings and programs, like the summer Aquatics Camp, were added. Many of the programs continue today.

In 2002, the Sea Base began a $7.2 million project to transform the facility into a modern teaching and aquatics center. The expanded Newport Sea Base now features additional classrooms, a library, conference room, crew center, picnic area and new boating equipment. Fleets of boats include kayaks, canoes, rowboats and over three dozen sailboats. It is also home to the two Sea Scout Ships; Del Mar and Renegades, as well as the Chapman University Crew Team, Chapman University Sailing Team and Corona del Mar High School Sailing Team.

Year Round Classes

Learn to Sail / Learn to row! Or get your feet wet paddleboarding! How about sitting down cruising in a kayak? Come explore one of the west coast's premier harbors on a variety of Sea Base craft. Make it a custom or group class!

Spring Break Adventures

Sailing skill building and wacky camp competitions await! The all-day adventures emphasize small boat sailing, but also offer big boat/keelboat sailing and paddle sport opportunities.

Sea Scouts

Sea Scout units, called "Ships", focus on sailing and cruising in either sailboats or power vessels. During the boating seasons, Sea Scouts learn to maintain and operate their vessel with a focus on learning safe and proper methods of handling boats. Sea Scouts also learn to navigate buoys and lights and how to take advantage of winds and tides, drop anchor and dock approach.

Sea Scouting is a youth-led and adult-mentored 104-year old program. Elected youth leaders plan and conduct the program and adult leaders guide and support their efforts in learning important leadership and life skills. As Scouts gain experience they will have the opportunity to contribute as leaders on their ships.

The best part of Sea Scouts is cruising and mastering the skills learned with their shipmates. On board a vessel they share hands-on experiences as helmsman, navigator, lookout, cook, sail handler and engineer.

  1. SSS 90 - Sea Scout Ship
  2. SSS 711 Del Mar - Sea Scout Ship - The Del Mar's program is centered around the ship's Columbia 43 Del Mar. The Del Mar is a very active organization. We meet every Wednesday night from 7pm to 9pm. The first part of the meeting is focused on the advancement of the members. This involves learning knots, navigation, marching and other crucial skills. The second half of the meeting is devoted to going over the ships business and planning ship events. This includes cruises, regattas (competitive events with other ships), work parties to keep the boat in good shape, and public service projects.

OCC Council
