Re:New User:Bluegoblin7

Hello,

I've seen your message on my French talk page, thanks for your proposal. The English ScoutWiki really needs native English-speaking contributors, so you are really welcome!

May I ask you which are the radical changes you wish to make to the wiki ? For those which do not require you to have the admin rights, feel free to apply them on this wiki as soon as you want. The admin rights we will possibly grant you later, when we will have seen that you really are ready to become involved in the project. I think one month of regular contributions would do it, especially if you keep in touch with the rest of the team on forum or IRC.

So it would be great, if you came to speak a bit with our other main international contributors, either on our forum or, more likely, on our IRC channel (#scoutwiki @ Freenode). You may also wish to contact the other main contributor on this wiki, Ericblazek, a US scouter who joined in November.

For the time going, if you really need some changes to be done which require admin rights, you can ask me or Cedsib or ZeiP to apply them.

Feel free to contact by email: akela_nde(a)scoutwiki.org. I also have MSN address which I will be glad to give you if you wish.

Scout greetings,

Akela - yaw yaoooo ! 14:56, 20 December 2007 (EET)

Hi Akela,
Well, the main changes for now are a redesigned main page, sorting out your help area, and starting up the Portals/Workforces (like WikiProjects).
Ill make a list of pages to be deleted and i'll pass it on.
Thanks,

RE:Hello

Hello BG7,

I'm relatively new here myself, and no admin by a long shot. The guys that set the place up are all non-English speakers, and busy with the other sister projects, so the field is wide open to do as you like.

My projects here ATM include copying over the 'Scouting in [State]' from Wikipedia, but moving each of the councils to their own pages, and importing council shoulder patch images. That will keep me busy for awhile.

I am also collecting emails for all the council webpages I can find to send email requesting a link on their page. We're going to have to advertise this place heavily to really get it off the ground.

BTW, I'm a railfan as well, with the BNSF line from OKC to Dallas running right through town (Norman, OK). I do a little HO modelling as well, and really enjoy the old Frisco line, which ran through the town I grew up in (Sapulpa, OK). Got a Spectrum Russian Decapod
http://www.traintrack.net/Engines/Images/Bachmann/84302.gif
that is the pride of my line. Even been to St.Louis RR Museum to climb on the real thing. Do you do any modelling ?

Ericblazek 16:25, 20 December 2007 (EET)

Hi Ericblazek,
It's good to know that - i will start of by maiking the place more User Friendly, and then get on with articles etc.
Yes I do model, I have a fictional one, set in Middle England. It is a Preserved or Heritage Railway.
Why not set up an account at Train Spotting World (i don;t care if you're not a train spotter - neither am I!) and do some contributing there?
Thanks,
BG7 16:34, 20 December 2007 (EET)
PS that's a lovely loco - what gauge is it?
HO - recently moved my layout, and working on designing a new setup with my son (Webelos I). Going with a tabletop layout, about 66"x130", a scenery wall down the middle with a city on one side and a mountain/mine seen on the other. Ericblazek
Ok. My layout is 00, the UK equiv of H0, and it's a 12ft x 2 ft "Plank", with a fiddle yard at each end after disappearing into a Tunnel/Uner a bridge. The link for TSW is http://train.spottingworld.com if you didnt know.

Re: En-wiki…

Hello BG7, I made the changes you had requested on the pages you told me. If you're still interrested into becoming an admin here, please subscribe & write to our mailing list. That can be done on http://lists.scoutwiki.org .

I saw you were planning to create a community portal. I just changed ours on French ScoutWiki, so if you want to take inspiration from it, or even to copy it, feel free to do so. I'm of course available for questions of help of whatever you would need to know (and http://babelfish.altavista.com usually provides good translations ;-) ). Akela - yaw yaoooo ! 19:41, 5 January 2008 (EET)

Ok thanks a lot.
I'm also creating ScoutWiki:Applications for Adminship which is a must needed tool for the wiki... All we need is a b'crat to run it (i'm volunteering! The mailing list you say... ok. By the way, I know that Adminship is a task, i'm an admin at 6, yes, 6 other wikis...).
Thanks,
BG7 19:50, 5 January 2008 (EET)

I have replied to your questions on my talk page there. I thought I had done so long ago, but must have forgotten to save it. --Bduke 01:14, 6 January 2008 (EET)

Adminship

Congratulations for your new, shiny admin rights. I'm sure you know how to use the privileges responsibly, but if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the other SW admins at either on IRC (irc.freenode.net, channel #ScoutWiki) or through our mailing lists.

Have fun, --ZeiP 15:19, 6 January 2008 (EET)

.svg images

Hello BG7, I uploaded the .svg images you had requested (directly on ScoutMedia so that they can be used by other ScoutWikis). I also added the page a bit of text trying to explain how to manipulate .svg graphics, but if you need more explanation, feel free to ask on MSN or IRC. Happy birthday !

Happy birthday to the first english ScoutWiki admin !

Cedsib 18:44, 16 January 2008 (EET)

Thanks Cedsib!
Now, onto more pressing issues. I've been slacking a bit over here recently... better get going!

Help:Importing articles under GFDL

I do not think that this template meets the requirements of GDFL on its own. We also have to indicate which version was copied from Wikipedia. That was explained on another page which I think was linked from the main page when I first joined up here. I can not find it now. The advice was, on wikipedia, to click on "Permanent link" in the left menu and then "Copy link location" and then paste it into the edit summary when the article is first saved on ScoutWiki. After the first few I have been doing that. I think we need to do that and add the template. For the first few I found the version number and pasted it to the talk page. If we do not do that it is impossible to see the correct history of the article. --Bduke 03:22, 7 February 2008 (EET)

Re: ScoutMedia

Hello BG7, nice to hear from you :-)

So to answer your questions about ScoutMedia :

  1. Why not ? If you have a good reason, tell us on the mailing list or on IRC and we will see if we grant admin rights to you or not.
  2. I'm affraid it won't be possible, as it is the common main page and as it is using a template with parameters so that it is similar in every language. Also, there are still many red links on the English ScoutWiki main page … Sorry about that, though.

Hope you're doing well and the English ScoutWiki too. Akela - yaw yaoooo ! 22:11, 25 March 2008 (EET)

Hello :-)
Just a quick note about Neckerchiefs because I saw you asked Bono to do some for you : you can easily make them by yourself using the generator I made : http://www.scoutwiki.org/~jeoire/neckgen
You just need to follow the on-screen instructions, it produces a .svg neckerchief you can download and upload to Scoutmedia, using template {{neckerchief}}. Have fun ! Akela - yaw yaoooo ! 20:00, 2 April 2008 (EEST)
One like that ?
Bordered-symmetrical 000000-000000-ff0000-ffffff.svg
You just have to put black as both background and right background. Sorry, to me that was obvious … :-/ Akela - yaw yaoooo ! 20:48, 2 April 2008 (EEST)
Oh yes... Of course - it is obvious, i just went a bit brain dead!

Re: Where do i work?

Hi BG7, I work for Jarvis rail, in the S&T design office in Manchester. We design signalling schemes and installations here there and everywhere. Signed up here back in october, but got invoolved in setting up scout network in my county. Between that, and the two groups i run, i didn't have time to do anything else for a while. Welcome

Thank you, BG7, to welcome me.
I'm italian, so I'm most active in Italian SW, but I look around if there are some details to edit. Sorry for my english :)

Ugly frontpage + my advice

Hi,

Can you please simplify the front page? With the current format, constant new items are necessary to fill the front page. But no one seems to feel responsible for making them. I therefore think it is better to have a static front page. You may use Main_Page/Sandbox or simply take an old version of 2007 for the front page.

Question for all administrators on en.scoutwiki.org

Currently, Egel and I are active with cleaning up the English ScoutWiki, aiming on:

  • making it a better example for the other language ScoutWiki's
  • making it a useful intermediate for exchange of information between other languages

However: there are a few quite disturbing issues on which we need the help of one administrator, because we can nog deal with them ourselves:

  • The main page is ugly, because the dynamic items are not updated regularly: I suggest putting this new idea or this old concept on the main page instead.
  • There are many candidates for speedy deletion
  • Of the EIGHT administrators, no one seems to have time to check regularly to see if help is needed.

Can one of you come by and be a bit active again? Or otherwise give me or Egel administrator rights for this English version of the scoutwiki? In that case, we can do all the cleaning up ourselves. Sietske 09:25, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your quick response! I'm very happy with it! Sietske 10:46, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
No worries at all. Now that there is some more interest being shown in the wiki I may be inclined to become more active ;). That said, I need to get onto the SW people as there are still a lot of corrupt bits and bobs on the wiki. Running 1.15.1 isn't particularly helpful either! BG7 10:51, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
It would be nice when you would become more active! It doesn't have to be much, though. If at least once a week something happens at this scoutwiki, it keeps things going. And that may lead to other people contributing! Sietske 11:17, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
