The Slieve Bloom Scout County is a Scouting Ireland affiliated county in the midlands area of Ireland around the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

Overview

The County is made up of 14 troops, one from Tipperary, 5 from Laois and 8 from Offaly. The county is widely considered one of the strongest in the country with a very unified view at important events such as Scouting Ireland's National Council.[citation needed] Regular county meetings are held in Birr in County Offaly. The county itself covers troops from towns in the area such as Roscrea, Birr, Tullamore and Portlaoise. The troops have regular county events together, mainly in the Slieve Bloom Mountains. In these mountains, the county has one national campsite at Srahan Scout Centre. [1]

Events

The county participates actively in provincial and national events. At National Council 2008, it was said of the county that it displayed "great unity" as members of the county backed each other up on motions put forward by county commissioner, James Marks. Some criticised the county for putting in so many motions but, in general, the reactions were good.[citation needed] At the National Youth Forum in 2008, Slieve Bloom sent a large group of delegates and in the end, one of the delegates, Briain de Seadhach, was elected to the National Youth Reps. [2] The strength of the county is further displayed in the fact that the South-Eastern Province Provincial Commissioner, Francis Minogue, is also from the Province- 6th Tipperary Roscrea troop. The county organised a large amount of events in 2008 including a Regional Mountain Challenge (County MPC) [3] , a County Challenge Day (and on to the National Challenge Day) and a Santa Claus visit to Srahan scout centre for younger scouts. More events like these are planned for 2009.[1]
